About Psych Care Uganda

Psych Care Uganda is a youth-led community-based organization working to improve the well-being of adolescents in underserved communities. We focus on strengthening access to mental health support while addressing other factors that influence young people’s health, development, and future opportunities.

Our work centers on adolescent mental health because it is a critical but often overlooked area of health and development. Many young people experience stress, anxiety, trauma, and other mental health challenges, yet few have access to safe spaces, information, or professional support.

Through school and community-based programs, Psych Care Uganda works to ensure adolescents receive the support they need to understand their mental health, build resilience, and make informed decisions about their lives.

Why Mental health? Why young people?

Adolescence is a critical period of development. However, many mental health challenges begin during this stage and remain unrecognized.

  • Half of all mental health conditions begin by the age of 14, yet most cases remain undetected and untreated. Poor mental health can affect how young people learn, interact with others, and make decisions about their lives.

  • Mental well-being also influences behaviors linked to long-term health outcomes, including substance use, violence, and risky sexual behavior. Without early support, these challenges can persist into adulthood and limit opportunities for education, employment, and healthy relationships.

Psych Care Uganda works to close this gap by strengthening mental health awareness, early support systems, and protective environments for adolescents.

Our Approach

We work through schools and communities to reach adolescents where they spend most of their time. Our programs combine mental health support with life skills development, mentorship, and health education.

Our approach includes:

  • Providing mental health education, screening, and counseling for adolescents

  • Establishing school-based mental health clubs that promote peer support and awareness

  • Training teachers and caregivers to better support adolescent well-being

  • Delivering sexual and reproductive health education and life skills programs

  • Connecting adolescents with mentors, role models, and career guidance opportunities

By strengthening both individual skills and community support systems, we help adolescents build the confidence and resilience needed to navigate life’s challenges.
